Cerement, a performance piece commissioned by Ayşe Nur Gençalp, adopts its name from the Eastern tradition that suggests a fortuneteller wears his own cerement wrapped to his head as an attempt to ‘live’ with the undeniable existence of his future death. In this piece, the performer Azmi Mert Erdem, adopting the role of the fortuneteller, makes assumptions about the participator’s past, present and future referring to selected lines in A Christmas Carol as he reads the coffee grounds from the the participator’s cup.

Cerement was featured at the exhibition, Shadows Will Guide Me, curated by Osman Can Yerebakan at Irondale Center in Brooklyn, New York from December 21st to 22nd, 2012. This exhibition is organized as a part of the staging of A Christmas Carol; A Ghost Story produced by Laurie Strickland and Jamie Bullins.
